Your Jaw is a Reflection of your Pelvic Floor

Did you know that your Jaw is a literal Mirror of your Pelvic Floor? They are DIRECTLY connected! SO much so that doulas literally use the TMJ and vocal cords to help relaxation with birth!

So...how does this happen? Here are some of the ways that the pelvic floor and the TMJ are connected:

  1. Embryo: Did you know that the pelvic floor and TMJ share the same embryological tissue? They are also formed around the same time in gestation.

  2. Fascia Connections: The same fascia that connects the adductors to the pelvic floor also connects up to the diaphragm and the neck and jaw! This is through the deep frontal fascial line.

3. Vagus Nerve! The vagus nerve travels from the neck/SCM area and jaw muscles and travels down the diaphragm, stomach and pelvic floor. It also affects these areas due to its connections with the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.

4. Posture! Your posture affects your pelvic floor through the orientation of the low back, diaphragm and core. It ALSO affects your TMJ! Forward head posture causes poor muscle patterns throughout the TMJ and causes tension along the jaw, head and neck. It also affects the strength in your neck and jaw. Along with forward head posture usually comes with poor posture in the lumbar spine and this, in turn, effects the pelvic floor.
